GIRL: SIX COLOR SOCIETY: ROOM SEVEN
I took a deep breath as Heaven sat in the backseat talking about only God knows what. I could not believe I’d just run into Lonnie. The last time that I’d seen her, she had long dreadlocks down her back and her pants sagged. Now she had straight hair that fell from a roller wrap, make-up on her face, and I could actually see her waistline. Time sure does change a lot.
I guess you could call Lonnie my college experience. We both played on the same basketball team and after being around women so long, I was curious to try them. Lonnie stood out to me the most with her toned body and play-girl attitude.
Even though I was on the team I never really made many friends. I stayed focused and played my position, admiring Lonnie from afar. She was nothing like me. She loved the spotlight.
I sat in the locker room one afternoon packing up my gym bag with my funky uniform and sweaty shoes so that I could get them all cleaned up on my visit home. I thought I was alone until Lonnie walked up and scared me halfway to death.
“Jesus! You must walk really light.” I said.
She laughed. “My bad, I didn’t know anyone was in here. I would have made myself known.”
“It would have been appreciated.” I said and finished packing my bag.
“What you doing in here anyhow?” she asked.
“Just grabbing some stuff from my locker, then I’ll probably shower.” I replied.
“Need somebody to wash your back?” Lonnie joked.
“I don’t know what you mean? Are you being sexual?” I snapped.
“Nah, that was a genuine offer.” She smirked.
“I’ll pass.” I said.
I really wanted to say, “Hell yeah!” I wanted her to palm me like she did the basketball, but I wasn’t that bold and I wasn’t really sure I wanted to go that route with women. I left my bag by the bench in the locker room and headed to the shower, undressing along the way.
As the hot water ran from my hair to my toes, I felt a presence— another body. I opened my eyes and Lonnie was standing right there.
I jumped. “That kind of shit can get you hurt!”
“You can’t tell me you didn’t hear my feet this time.” She said.
I took a step back. “No, I didn’t.”
She laughed. “I think you just scare easy.”
“Whatever.” I said and turned to finish showering. Lonnie stood close by.
“So, why do you always isolate yourself?” Lonnie asked.
“I don’t isolate myself.” I said.
“Yes, you do. You don’t talk to anybody on the team, go out with us, or nothing.” She stated.
“I don’t need any distractions right now.” I replied.
“We won’t distract you. We just want to bond with you.” She confessed.
“Am I to assume that y’all talk about me when I’m not around?” I asked.
Lonnie shook her head. “Not in bad way. We just want to know you, that’s all. It’s more fun to play with people you get along with.”
I let the water run over my face and half-mumbled. “I guess that’s understandable.”
“How about you come out with us tonight.” She offered.
“Can’t, I’m heading home in the morning.” I replied.
“We won’t be out late.” She said.
I stood and thought about it for a moment then finally agreed. She smiled victoriously and continued to wash herself. I watched her from the corner of my eye. Damn she’s sexy. Damn it, Tamera, no she’s not! I tried to focus on washing myself, but it was hard to as I watched soap suds slide down her caramel body. She wasn’t like most of my teammates that were covered in tattoos. Her body was clean, clear, and smooth.
I turned off the water and headed back to my bag so that I could dress and get back to my dorm. If I stayed in there one more second, I was going to jump on Lonnie and force her to teach me the unfamiliar. I finished dressing, grabbed my bag, and rushed out.
Once I got to my room, I was pissed at myself for agreeing to go out with the team. I didn’t have a single thing to wear since I didn’t party. My roommate, Ferrin, who was also another one of my teammates, walked into the room and caught me pulling different tops and bottoms from my closet.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“I’m trying to find something to wear.” I said in a frustrated tone.
“Are you actually going somewhere on a Friday night?” She asked with a raised brow.
“Yeah. Lonnie basically guilt tripped me.” I replied.
“And you’re going out with Lonnie?” She laughed.
I halted and turned. “What’s funny?”
“You do know where she hangs out, right?” Ferrin sked.
“Clubs.” I stated.
“Not just any clubs. Gay clubs.” Ferrin emphasized.
I stood still for a moment and stared at my roommate. I was struggling enough with my sexuality. Did I really want to put myself in that situation and after silent debate I decided what the hell? What was the worst that could happen?
Ferrin got tired of watching me torture myself with failed outfits and dressed me herself in something from her closet. She did my hair and makeup too. Not that I wasn’t capable, she just wanted to do it.
Lonnie knocked at our door the moment that we were done. Ferrin opened it and Lonnie’s mouth dropped as she laid eyes on my tiny blue jean shorts and a black top that showed off my basketball abs and belly ring.
“Damn.” She said without thought.
Ferrin interjected. “Don’t be saying damn. You better bring her back just the way she leaves and don’t try anything funny, gay girl.” She spat.
“Ferrin, shut up.” Lonnie said. “You ready, Tam?” She asked and held the door open.
“Yeah. Sure.” I said, grabbing my little black wallet and heading out of the door.
I could feel Lonnie’s eyes on my ass.
