A 30-Day Challenge to Transform Your Writing Life

Hello, fellow writers! It's that magical time of year again: National Novel Writing Month. For 30 days, I’m challenging myself—and you—to dive into the craft we’re so passionate about and make real progress toward our dreams of writing a book.

If you’re like me, you might have a list of stories swirling around in your head or tucked away in a notebook, waiting for the “perfect time” to start. But if we wait for everything to line up, for a flawless moment where inspiration meets motivation, that time might never come. There’s no better moment than now to start and no better reason than NaNoWriMo to give it all we’ve got.

So, how can we stay focused and motivated for 30 days straight? Let’s take it one step, one word, and one story at a time.

Set Your Intention and Make it Known
This month is about more than just reaching a word count. It's a commitment to yourself and your creative journey. When I start a big project, I like to set a powerful intention. This is my chance to create something meaningful, explore new ideas, and let my voice take center stage. I invite you to do the same: think about why you're doing this, what you hope to achieve, and how incredible it will feel to finish.

Once you've defined your purpose, share it with someone. Tell a friend, post about it on social media, or jot it down in a journal. When our intentions are shared, they become real. You’re no longer just thinking about it—you're doing it.

Create Small, Achievable Milestones
Let’s face it: 50,000 words can feel huge! But by breaking that down, we make it manageable. I set myself mini-goals, like a certain word count each day or writing for 20-30 minutes each morning before my day really kicks off. These small wins add up, and each day brings me closer to my final goal.

Try setting a goal that works for you. Whether it’s 500 words, 1,000, or whatever fits into your life, let that be your daily achievement. Celebrate each milestone, no matter how small, because you’re building momentum—and that momentum will carry you.

Embrace the Messy First Draft
If there’s one thing that stops writers in their tracks, it’s the idea that the first draft has to be perfect. This month, let’s give ourselves the freedom to write “ugly.” It's okay if our sentences don’t flow perfectly or if we end up with loose plot threads. That’s what editing is for. Right now, our job is to put words on the page and build our story, however imperfect it may look.

When I catch myself overthinking, I remind myself that some of my favorite books probably had rough beginnings too. Even the most beautiful novels were once messy drafts. This is our time to create without judgment.

Find Your Community
One of the best parts of NaNoWriMo is the community. Thousands of writers around the world are participating, and they’re all facing the same struggles and triumphs. I find it so inspiring to connect with other writers online, to share progress and challenges. Join a writing group or connect with others on social media. Those conversations are like fuel, reminding us that we’re not alone in this journey.

Visualize the Finish Line

As we start, it's important to think ahead and imagine the joy of having a completed draft in our hands at the end of this month. Picture it: December 1st arrives, and there’s your novel, ready to be shaped into something truly wonderful. That vision keeps me going, even on days when the words don’t come easy.

So, here we go—30 days of writing, of pushing our limits, of believing in our stories. Let’s commit to showing up, to giving it our best, and to supporting each other along the way. I can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish.
